I dropped the N bomb in all chat in a non offensive manner. The only reason I got banned for it because I was yelling at some people in Grotto before hand and they probably got upset at me haha. Oh well. I was using it in the context of talking about that word being offensive and how I think people really need to get over it.

Oh the glee anet would have if they went back to some of my talks in Grotto, rated AO for Adults Only I tell ya. Good times though, good times indeed.

Now n days I don't really want to be banned so I try to keep it down and if I have to rage I shout obscenities at the PC screen towards the people on the game, think about doing bad things to them etc etc.. sometimes rage at people in whispers (Friends mind you)...but I've all out abandoned swearing in local chat because of trigger happy reporters. But I still feel good knowing I'm swearing at them and they can't ban me irl because they don't know I'm doing it.

Also sometimes I just like swearing, the F word is my magical key to happy times.

Gareth, do you remember a topic were people were talking about getting suspended for spamming something in a private chat with a friend?
It was people testing to see if there was some kind of language bot in the game.

Gaile said Dickens.

Yes the person cybering in Grotto and getting banned for it. I took part in that thread a couple times because this issue and how people cannot seem to take it in the chest get on my nerves. It's like the whole world has become sissified and put to a weakened mental state that they cannot shake off the offensiveness of silly words. Even myself. But if I get offended I either A. do it right back B. punch them or C. just turn and walk away and then there's D but that's illegal.

But the majority have the stiff morals so I just agree with them and carry on with my offensiveness in private.

Simple. Swearing should not be banned, but filter evading should be.

Oh, I was only curious if it was figured out if the person was suspended because a bot picked up on what was said, as I thought several people tried on purpose to spam words in private chat with people they knew wouldn't report them, and the people claimed they got a suspension.
But I wasn't sure if it was true.

Chat filter is defined as a filtration option to replace a number of assigned inappropriate volcabularies with "-" icons. Knowing this, we should understand that this filtration can only filter a limited number of so-called inappropriate words, and even though it is filtered, the user will be aware of that he is being cussed of as the "-" icons will still appear. In other words, we should know chat filter can only decrease the uncomfort caused by inappropriate language, but not erase it throughly.

Secondly, inappropriate language can be defined in various levels. By reading through the thread, I believe that no one knows the exact level of this inappropriate language had been conducted other than the OP. However, we do know that the level of inappropriateness is enough to get the OP a 64 hours bann, and that's enough for us to believe that he has done enough for the punishment based on Anet's standard.

Lastly, the so-called freedom of one expressing himself by using inappropriate language is only valid under circumstances. We need to understand that other people have freedom as well: the freedom of not being disturbed by inappropriate languages. Knowing this, we should understand that boundaries are set to enforce the comforts for both parties. In this case, the OP has crossed the line, and therefore proper punishment has been conducted. That sounds fair to me.

My current roommate only swears when he's drunk. If he's sober and swears it's a shock to everyone. It's strange.
As for me, when anyone has heard me swear, they always say how incredibly weird it was to hear me swear, as I just don't do it.
I know that it's a habit, language is also a social construct, so if you're taught English and then when your family swears, you simply "get used to it". Swear words are sometimes like "smileys", they convey an emotional content in a very easy/speedy way. They don't add that much content to the words (it's a somewhat emphasised version of "I'm angry" or "I'm bored", but then why do we have nuances such as "very angry" or "extremely angry"? bear in mind, I'm not a native speaker...)

I do swear, and often regret it. Not that I hate expressing emotions, but it's totally inappropriate and useless. Keeping calm or doing some kind of physical (constructive) activity is much better.

Oh and btw, people swearing are not stupid. On the contrary I know a lot of smart people who swear (let's forget about drunkards ). My messages are just here to rectify one point: this is NOT normal behaviour, as the general population does not swear. Swearing sometimes appear "cool" or even "trendy" (British TV has this show where the cook Gordon Ramsey swears all the time, it's called "the F word"), but from a language point of view it's generally a step backward. But we're only humans!

QFT. I mean, if you have a character that says 'War W H O R E' or something, I can understand that. Things like that, etc.

Or, instead of stars, Anet should do a copy and make all cuss words become...

"BLUE ENGINE GOBLUE ENGINE GOBLUE ENGINE GOBLUE ENGINE GOing monk!"

/sigh

Problem number 1:
A little example:

Someone spamming all-chat with crap like this:
KILL ALL BLACK PEOPLE!!11!!!!
ALL BLACK PEOPLE ARE CRIMINALS AND SHUD DIE!!!111!!!

This is not picked up by swear filter. However, it's probably considered inappropriate language by a lot of people, even those who turn the chat filter off. So, what this topic is suggesting, is that people like that can not be reported by people who turned off the chat filter? Yeah, that helps...

Problem number 2:
- Whoops, I can't report you because my chat filter is off. *turns chat filter on* /report

I doubt ANet bans for small things like F-word, S-word, Damn,... because, well, that's just silly, een if loads of people reported him. People today get loads of that already from TV.
So, instead of figuring out if the reports need changing, I'd rather ask what the OP said in all chat that got him banned in the first place.

If you don't like swearing, turn chat filters on. Don't bitch and moan about not swearing in the first place...what planet are you people from?

Always a very touchy subject. People swear to express themselves. I hear it everyday and do it myself, vocally. However, in-game chat is a little different than a vocal conversation. Saying "What the ****!" is sort of an unconcious thing. Typing it and hitting <enter> is a deliberate act. Think before you hit <enter>.

Also: Wether or not you think you have the right to swear, there are rules to the game ..... rules that YOU agreed to abide by "signing" the EULA. You break the rules and get caught, you get banned.

See... this is where anet has no set rules for swearing. I went to report someone who cussed me out like mad for no reason. Anet's response to me was to turn on the chat filter and he didn't get locked. But other players can say the "F" word and get banned for a few days.

The chat filter do not work correctly with all words and all languages.
Even with the chat filter dumb and hate speech can be seen.

If a mad guy starts advertising Nazi propaganda, that's reportable too.

People turning off filters to ban others are the same type who'd try to beat me up IRL if they learned I was gay. "Cleaning" a game vs. "cleaning" the earth. I saw the behaviour A LOT in Yahoo Chats.

I found out that to slightly provoke them triggers the same cursing and hatred that they think they're cleaning the room/game/chat of... pointing out a fallacy/hypocrisy is usually the best way of shutting someone up. Then they start insluting back, proving your point... too bad they don't listen and continously say that they're right...

QFT. About the first true thing anyone has said.

Not a SINGLE one of you here can say you've never once cursed. And if you claim it, I'm sorry but then I'm calling your bluff. Wait what's that forum term? "Screenshots or it never happened"?

And what is the bullshit about "typing it in a game is a conscious act because you hit enter"? I type in a game EXACTLY like I talk. I use capitals when I would emphasise a word, _like this_ for a different style emphasis and I curse just like normal. Maybe I spend too much time on the internet, but I like to be able to read people from any form of communication, and thus I type in a way which allows people to read me back (sub-consciously). I swear not because it's pre-meditated, or because I am raging, but because it seems like it fits, I find it needed or I'm expressing myself. The curse filter is there to be used, and as Kusandaa stated, turning it off to get someone bans shows the rest of the world just one thing; you don't mind the cursing in the least, you're just a horrible person who probably needs a good personality wake-up call.
